# Highly-interactive multi-level pie chart
[Free trial](https://carrotsearch.com/circles/free-trial/) [Live demos](https://get.carrotsearch.com/circles/latest/demos)

Circles is a great tool to explore all kinds of hierarchies and data breakdowns.
This screen shot is a visualization of 500 web search results for query _data mining_ clustered into a 3-level hierarchy. Clustering of search results was obtained from the [Lingo3G clustering engine on-line demo](http://search.carrotsearch.com/carrot2-webapp/search?query=data+mining&results=100&source=etools&algorithm=lingo3g&view=circles).

## Effortless exploration of data breakdowns
Circles is an interactive visualization of multi-level data, such as numerical value breakdowns or tree-like structures. Written in JavaScript, for desktop and mobile.

### Instant overview
Top-down overview of your data. Large groups, the smaller ones, all in one picture.

### Rapid exploration
Explore the data points of interest using the zoom-in feature.

### Great on desktop and mobile
Circles is a JavaScript component, works in any modern browser, desktop or mobile.

### Export as JPEG or PNG
Save the visualization as an image you can embed in, for example, a Word document.

### Complements Lingo3G
Add a new look and more interaction to clusters from Lingo3G or Lingo4G.

### JavaScript API
Integrate Circles within minutes using a simple JavaScript API, 21k gzipped.
## Superb results out of the box
Complex layouts and interactions require a little customization code. We can help with that.

### Multi-level pie-chart
Visually pleasing hierarchical pie-chart with properly curved labels and rich interactions.
Circles is a visually pleasing hierarchical pie-chart with properly curved labels and rich interactions.
The screen shot shows Circles visualization of the 3-level cluster structure generated by Lingo3G for 500 web search results for query _data mining_. View the [settings panel demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/circles/latest/demos/tweakpanel.html) for the interactive version.

### Zooming
You can zoom into one or more groups to inspect the contents more closely.
When you double click on a slice, it will expand to take more screen space and show its child slices in more detail.

### Configurable colors
By writing a few lines of code you can customize the colors of slices and labels.
You can color the slices and labels in your Circles visualization in an arbitrary way. All you need to do is to write a callback function that will return the color for each group.
The screen shot shows the [settings panel](https://get.carrotsearch.com/circles/latest/demos/tweakpanel.html) demo with a zebra-stripes color callback enabled.

### Multilingual and emoji-friendly
Supports all special characters your browser can display, including emoji.
FoamTree can display all the characters your browser can render, including Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean as well as emoji.
View the [settings demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/circles/latest/demos/tweakpanel.html) and choose the multilingual data set there for an interactive version.

### Extensive tuning
Settings panel for tuning of visual properties and exporting them to your code.
You can tune various aspects of the look and behavior of Circles, including colors, fonts, border widths, ring sizing, animation types and speeds.
The screen shot shows the [settings panel demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/circles/latest/demos/tweakpanel.html) with settings altered to color the slices based on a yellow-to-green gradient.

### Layout customizations
By changing sizes of individual slices you can implement non-standard layouts.
You can write a small piece of code that governs the sizing of individual Circles slices and thus customize the layout of your pie charts.
The screen shot shows an example that abuses Circles API a little bit to create a [spiral chart](https://get.carrotsearch.com/circles/latest/demos/spiral.html). Another great example of custom layout is the [US demographics](https://get.carrotsearch.com/circles/latest/demos/infographics.html) demo.

### Animated interactions
Data can enter and leave the visualization stage in a number of animated ways.
Circles uses animated transitions for zooming, revealing and replacing the visualized data.

### JavaScript and JSON API
Get started within minutes. Circles is a small JavaScript library, 25kB gzipped.
To get your first visualization, pass a HTML element and some data to Circles constructor. See [Circles API reference](https://get.carrotsearch.com/circles/latest/api) for detailed documentation of all available options.

# Interactive visualization of 2D point collections
[Free trial](https://carrotsearch.com/dotatlas/free-trial/) [Live demos](https://get.carrotsearch.com/dotatlas/latest/demos)

dotAtlas is a great tool to visualize and explore collections of 2D points. This screenshot shows a zoomed-in [dotAtlas visualization of over one million arXiv paper abstracts](https://get.carrotsearch.com/dotatlas/latest/demos/visualizing-1m-points.html).
The marker layer draws points representing individual papers, where the color corresponds to the cluster the paper belongs to. The label layer shows phrases describing various areas of the map. Finally, the elevation layer adds depth to the visualization by highlighing the densely populated areas.
dotAtlas visualizations are fully-interactive, including 60 FPS zooming and panning, allowing users to explore the data in detail.

## Map-like visualization of 2D point collections
dotAtlas combines various types of layers, such as elevations, markers, or labels, for space-efficient interactive exploration of large 2D point collections.

### For any data type
Visualize 2D points representing documents, words, or any other data.

### For any embedding
Visualize 2D embeddings from UMAP, t-SNE, Lingo4G or any other algorithm.

### For data clusters
Use colors to add cluster membership information to the visualization.

### For production and research
Ready for production applications, great for research experiments.

### Blazing fast
WebGL-based 60 FPS animations, even with millions of data points.

### JavaScript API
Integrate dotAtlas within minutes using a simple JavaScript API.
## Stack layers of different types into a stunning visualization
More complex visualizations and interactions require a little customization code. We can help with that.

### Marker layers
Display individual points as markers with custom per-marker colors, shapes, sizes, and opacities.
The marker layer displays points as markers on your map. You can customize marker properties like color, shape, size, and opacity to represent different attributes of your data.
[Markers layer demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/dotatlas/latest/demos/marker-properties.html)

### Label layer
Annotate groups of points with text labels with control over color, opacity, and display priorities.
The label layer adds textual annotation to your map. You can control label properties like color and opacity, and set display priorities so that the most important labels show at lower zoom levels.
[Labels layer demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/dotatlas/latest/demos/label-properties.html)

### Elevation layer
Add depth to your data with an elevation layer for a topographic map-like experience.
The elevation layer creates a topographic map-like visualization that can add depth to your data. Points with higher elevation values appear as peaks, while points with lower values form valleys.
This creates a visually appealing and intuitive way to represent the importance or density of points in your dataset.
[Elevation layer demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/dotatlas/latest/demos/layer-properties.html)

### Outline layer
Highlight important areas of your 2D embedding with one or more outline layers.
Stack one or more outline layers on top of your visualization to highlight specific groups of points, for example the points the user selected for further inspection.
[Point selection demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/dotatlas/latest/demos/hover-and-selection.html)

### Plugins add high-level features
Dark mode, hover and selection tracking, nearby point clustering, elevation value legend and more.
Plugins use the core dotAtlas API to implement higher-level features, such as dark mode or hover and selection tracking. The source code of all plugins is available for inspection and modification.
[Map legend plugin demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/dotatlas/latest/demos/map-legend.html)
[Selection plugin demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/dotatlas/latest/demos/hover-and-selection.html)

### Lingo4G integration
Visualize Lingo4G document embeddings and clusters as an interactive map using a dedicated plugin.
dotAtlas integrates with Lingo4G to visualize document embeddings and clusters as an interactive map. Each marker represents a document, and similar documents appear close together on the map.
[Lingo4G plugin demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/dotatlas/latest/demos/lingo4g-doc-map.html)

### Smooth even with 1M+ points
Visualize millions of points at once, enjoy responsiveness and smooth interactions.
You can visualize collections of millions of points at once and still enjoy responsiveness and smooth interactions. You can display new data incrementally as they become available.
[Visualizing 1M+ points demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/dotatlas/latest/demos/visualizing-1m-points.html)

### Attention to detail
Realistic map-like rendering with light shading and broken contours for better visibility of labels.

### Fluid 60 FPS interactions
Implemented in WebGL for blazing fast interactions, also with large data sets.

### PNG and JPEG export
Export visualizations to PNG or JPEG images for offline use.

# Addictively interactive Voronoi treemap
[Free trial](https://carrotsearch.com/foamtree/free-trial/) [Live demos](https://get.carrotsearch.com/foamtree/latest/demos)

FoamTree is a great tool to visualize all kinds of hierarchical data.
This screen shot shows a demo application that [visualizes companies from the Financial Times FT 500 list](https://get.carrotsearch.com/foamtree/latest/demos/ft500.html). Companies are grouped into a 2-level hierarchy by sector, size of the cells corresponds to the market value of the company, color depicts the p/e ratio.

## Efficient browsing of hierarchical data. And fun too.
FoamTree is a JavaScript Voronoi treemap visualization. Innovative layouts, animated interactions, endless customization.

### Great on desktop and mobile
FoamTree is a JavaScript HTML5 component. It will work in any modern browser, both on desktop and mobile platforms.
### Countless applications
Our customers use FoamTree to present a broad range of data: word clouds, news highlights, financial results, photos, site maps and more.
## Great experience out of the box
For stunning results, level up and write a little customization code. We can help with that.

### Non-rectangular layouts
Visually pleasing non-rectangular layouts efficiently use the available space.
FoamTree's default layout is based on Voronoi power diagrams. It divides the available space into convex polygons, creating organic-looking arrangements.
The screen shot shows FoamTree visualization of the 3-level cluster structure generated by Lingo3G for 500 web search results for query _data mining_. View the [settings panel demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/foamtree/latest/demos/settings.html) for the interactive version.

### Rectangular treemaps
Traditional squarified and ordered rectangular treemaps are also supported.
FoamTree also supports the traditional rectangular treemaps. Currently available are the squarified and ordered layout variants.
The screen shot shows [FT500 Global](http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/a352a706-16a0-11e5-b07f-00144feabdc0.html) companies grouped by sector. Cell size indicates market value, color corresponds to total assets. The interactive version is available in the [FT500 demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/foamtree/latest/demos/ft500.html).

### Zooming and exposing
Animated zooming and expose interaction for browsing of deeply nested hierarchies.
To better explore deep hierarchies, users can zoom into the areas of interest or 'expose' individual groups.
The screen shot shows the _Data Mining Algorithms_ group exposed. To see zooming in action, double-click cells in the [Tree of Life demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/foamtree/latest/demos/large.html). For the expose effect, double-click groups in the [Photo explorer demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/foamtree/latest/demos/flickr.html).

### Endless customizations
Custom content in each cell, including additional text, shapes or images.
By [writing some extra code](https://get.carrotsearch.com/foamtree/latest/api/#groupContentDecorator), you can draw arbitrary content in each FoamTree cell. The screen shot shows the [Photo explorer demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/foamtree/latest/demos/flickr.html) which displays daily top Flickr photos in FoamTree. Notice that the exposed cell's content consists of the individual photo, its title, author and view count below. The blurred version of the photo serves as the cell's backdrop.
Incidentally, the screen shot shows some spectacular photos of Poznan, Poland (where Carrot Search is based) by [Erik Witsoe](https://www.flickr.com/photos/ewitsoe/).

### Non-rectangular containers
Embedding Voronoi treemaps in any convex shape, such as a circle or diamond.
FoamTree can put polygonal Voronoi diagrams into any convex container, such as a triangle, hexagon or a circle.
Shown in the screen shot are FT500 companies grouped by sector and embedded in a circular container. View the [FT500 demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/foamtree/latest/demos/ft500.html) for an interactive version.

### Support for very large hierarchies
Handling of hierarchies with 100k+ nodes on 100+ levels, such as the tree of life data.
With lazy-loading and progressive disclosure, FoamTree makes it possible to browse deeply-nested hierarchies of 100k+ nodes and more.
The screen shot shows a selected part of the Tree of Life hierarchy with more than 100k nodes and the maximum of 37 nesting levels. Go to the [Tree of Life demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/foamtree/latest/demos/large.html) for an interactive version.

### Flattened and hierarchical stacking
All levels visible at once or in a top-down progressive disclosure arrangement.
FoamTree can display the polygonal and rectangular treemaps in two arrangements. On the left is the **flattened** arrangement where all levels of the hierarchy are visible at once. On the right is the **hierarchical** arrangement where only the top level of the hierarchy is visible and the user can click-and-hold specific groups to "open" them for further inspection.
The screen shot shows unit test coverage of the open source Carrot2 document clustering engine generated by Atlassian Clover. See the [coverage demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/foamtree/latest/demos/coverage.html) for an interactive version.

### Multilingual and emoji-friendly
Supports all special characters your browser can display, including emoji.
FoamTree can display all the characters your browser can render, including Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean as well as emoji.
View the [settings demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/foamtree/latest/demos/settings.html) and choose the multilingual data set there for an interactive version.

### Animated transitions
Multitude of animation parameters can create tens of rollout and pullback effects.
FoamTree uses animated transitions for zooming, exposing as well as revealing and replacing visualized data. Using a wide array of parameters, you can create your own data rollout and pullback effects.
The screen shots shows the [settings panel demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/foamtree/latest/demos/settings.html) and a frozen frame of one data rollout animation.

### Extensive tuning
Settings panel for tuning of visual properties and exporting them to your Java code.
You can tune various aspects of the look and behavior of FoamTree, including cell layout, colors and borders, label fonts and sizes, animation speeds and easing functions.
The screen shot shows the [settings panel demo](https://get.carrotsearch.com/foamtree/latest/demos/settings.html) with settings altered to get near-round shapes of FoamTree cells.

### JavaScript and JSON API
Get started within minutes. FoamTree is a small JavaScript library, 43kB gzipped.
To get your first visualization, pass a HTML element and some data to FoamTree constructor. See [FoamTree API reference](https://get.carrotsearch.com/foamtree/latest/api) for detailed documentation of all available options.

## Questions & Answers
### What are the applications of Lingo3G?[](#what-are-the-applications-of-lingo3g)
Lingo3G is stateless and processes all data in-memory. This makes it particularly suitable for clustering data coming from highly-dynamic collections, such as search results or social conversations.
Having said that, Lingo3G will be appropriate for processing any collection of texts where the total size does not exceed a few tens of megabytes.
### What is the largest collection Lingo3G can handle?[](#what-is-the-largest-collection-lingo3g-can-handle)
Lingo3G was designed to perform real-time in-memory clustering of small and medium collections of documents, which roughly corresponds to about 5,000 documents, a few kilobytes each.
The upper limit very much depends on the characteristics of your documents. Some of our customers report that they successfully use Lingo3G with as many as 100,000 documents. Please contact us for an evaluation license and performance tuning advice.
For collections spanning millions of documents and gigabytes of text, consider [Lingo4G](https://carrotsearch.com/lingo4g/).
### Does Lingo3G come with end-user applications?[](#does-lingo3g-come-with-user-applications)
Yes. Lingo3G comes with two browser-based apps for end users: [Search Results Clustering](https://search.carrotsearch.com) and [Clustering Workbench](https://search.carrotsearch.com/#/workbench). We created the apps to help you quickly try Lingo3G clustering on your data. However, if you find the apps useful in your daily text mining work, feel free to use them on a regular basis.
While we plan to add new features to the end-user apps, our priority is the development of the Lingo3G clustering algorithm core.
### How is Lingo3G licensed?[](#how-is-lingo3g-licensed)
We require one Lingo3G license per one physical or virtual server that runs Lingo3G binaries, regardless of the number of cores on the server, the number of users or requests handled by the server.
For large-scale or non-typical deployment scenarios, such as OEM distribution, please get in touch.
### What is the cost of a Lingo3G license?[](#what-is-the-cost-of-a-lingo3g-license)
The cost of a license depends on the [edition](https://carrotsearch.com/lingo3g/editions/), please [contact us](https://carrotsearch.com/contact/) for a quote.

## Questions and answers
### I integrated my code with Carrot2. How difficult will it be to switch to Lingo3G?[](#how-difficult-will-it-be-to-switch-from-carrot2-to-lingo3g)
Lingo3G plugs into the API framework defined by Carrot2, so switching to Lingo3G will be a matter of adding a few JARs to your project and changing the source code to use the Lingo3G algorithm identifier.
When it comes to tuning of clustering, each algorithm has its specific set of parameters, so after switching to Lingo3G you might need to tweak parameter values and lexical resources.
### Can I use Carrot2 algorithms in a commercial project?[](#can-i-use-carrot2-in-a-commercial-project)
Absolutely! Carrot2 is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license, which is very commercially-friendly.

## Licensing terms
### Licensing period
**One-year** and **perpetual** licenses are available for server editions. One-year license will stop working after 12 months. To continue using the software, you will need to purchase another one-year or perpetual license. Perpetual licenses will work indefinitely.
### Support and updates
All server licenses come with **12 months of software maintenance**, which includes support, minor and major product updates. Beyond this initial 12 month period, at any time, you may add further 12 months of software maintenance to your license at 50% of the initial purchase price.
All licenses come with several hours of free consulting, usually spent on integration with your existing software and clustering quality tuning.
All licenses allow using Lingo3G internally for the evaluation, development, testing and tuning purposes.
### Licensing upgrades
Upgrades from one-year to perpetual and from a lower to a higher edition (e.g. from Mini to Full Server) are possible within the validity period of the original license.
### Volume and OEM licensing
For non-typical scenarios, such as large-scale server deployments or redistribution of Lingo3G as part of other software, licensing terms are negotiated separately to best match the customer's sales and distribution models. If you think you will need such a license, please get in touch to discuss the details.
### Pricing
Please [contact us](https://carrotsearch.com/contact/) for further licensing and pricing information.
## Questions & Answers
### Are there any subscription fees?[](#are-there-any-subscription-fees)
No. Both one-year and perpetual server licenses are available for a one-time licensing fee.
### Can I get a trial license?[](#can-i-get-a-trial-license)
Absolutely! Please get in touch for a [free evaluation package](https://carrotsearch.com/lingo3g/free-trial/).
### Is there a free version?[](#is-there-a-free-version)
Yes, you can use the algorithms available in the [Carrot2](http://project.carrot2.org) open source framework. Please see the [comparison](#) for more details.
### What kind of limits can my Lingo3G license include?[](#what-limits-can-my-lingo3g-license-include)
Depending on your Lingo3G edition, your license file may limit the maximum number of documents Lingo3G will cluster in one request. If the limit is set to, for example, 1000, Lingo3G will cluster the first 1000 documents provided in the request body and put the remaining ones in the _Other topics_ cluster.
### Does Lingo3G limit the total size of my document collection?[](#does-lingo3g-limit-the-total-size-of-my-document-collection)
No. Lingo3G does not store the contents of your documents, it requires that the documents to cluster be provided as part of the clustering request. The responsibility for storing and fetching documents for clustering rests with the code that calls Lingo3G. Therefore, the notion of the total size of the document collection is irrelevant to Lingo3G.

# Clustering engine for millions of documents and gigabytes of text
[Free trial](https://carrotsearch.com/lingo4g/free-trial/)

Lingo4G is a software component you can use to implement interactive exploration of millions of documents spanning gigabytes of text.
Lingo4G Explorer, pictured in the screen shot, shows what you can build with Lingo4G REST API. Lingo4G Explorer is also a great tool for quick experiments with Lingo4G-powered large-scale text clustering.
The screen shot shows a 2D map visualization of 3.5k medical paper abstracts related to vaccines. Textually-similar abstracts are clustered together on the map. The panel on the right shows the top abstracts lying in the map region described as _measles vaccine_. Phases specific to the selected map region are highlighted in the text of the abstract.
Note: analysis presented in the screen shot took 2.76s to compute on a modern 16-core workstation with SSD storage. Analysis times will vary depending on the parameters of your hardware.

## Meaningful insights from large quantities of text
Lingo4G enables interactive exploration of millions of documents and gigabytes of text. In near-real-time, fully automatically, without external knowledge bases.

### Overview and drill-down
Get an overview of thousands of documents within seconds, instantly drill-down to documents of interest.

### Flexible API
Build custom text mining pipelines ranging from simple search to 2D mapping, time-series analysis and duplicate detection.

### Engaging visualizations
Combine topics, clusters and 2D document maps into powerful visualizations.

Lingo4G can extract the topics discussed in hundreds of thousands of documents within seconds.
The screen shot shows subtopics of the _gene_ topic identified in nearly 350k abstracts of medical articles. The graph presents lexical relationships between subtopics, while the content view on the right side shows topical phrases in context by highlighting them in the text of the analyzed documents.
Note: analysis presented in the screen shot took 2.76s to compute on a modern 16-core workstation with SSD storage. Analysis times will vary depending on the parameters of your hardware.
### Near-real-time topic discovery
Lingo4G can extract the topics discussed in hundreds of thousands of documents, along with lexical relationships between them, within seconds.
### Topical phrases in context
Lingo4G can _highlight_ selected topical phrases in the document text to put them in context and bring up the relevant parts.
### Large-scale processing
Lingo4G can arrange hundreds of thousands of documents into non-overlapping clusters and 2D maps to help plan, execute and refine research.
### Data slicing and filtering
Choose the document subset to analyze by typing a query, picking an area from the document map or selecting a topic or cluster to drill down on.

On modern hardware, Lingo4G can generate document clustering and map visualizations for hundreds of thousands of documents within minutes.
The screen shot shows the map of 128k SuperUser.com questions. Each dot represents one document, colors correspond to top-level document clusters.
Different thematic areas are clearly visible: _Excel_\-related questions in the top-right corner, network issues in the bottom-left corner, posts about web browsers in the middle. Smaller outlier groups, such as questions about disk drives (_RAID_, _SATA_) are also highlighted.
Note: analysis presented in the screen shot took about 1 minute to compute on a modern 16-core workstation with SSD storage. Analysis times will vary depending on the parameters of your hardware.

Lingo4G can build multidimensional vector representations of words, phrases and documents. Similar to word2vec, these representation can be used to find semantic relationships between labels and documents.
The screenshot shows a list of words and phrases similar to _Germany_, based on English Wikipedia data. Notice that the top of the list is occupied by European countries near Germany. The relationships were derived based only on the text of the input documents, no external taxonomies or resources were used.
### Semantic relationships between words, phrases and documents
Lingo4G can build vector representations of words, phrases and documents. They allow finding semantically-similar documents, even if the documents don't share common words or phrases.
All text processing tasks available in Lingo4G, such as document search, clustering or 2D mapping, can use vector-based semantic similarity.
### Flexible API
Lingo4G exposes all its text processing capabilities through a flexible REST/JSON API. The API allows assembling simple text processing components into pipelines of varying complexity. The tasks you can perform include:
- document search and retrieval,
- document clustering and 2D mapping,
- extracting topics from documents,
- finding near-duplicate documents.

Lingo4G exposes all its text processing capabilities through a flexible REST/JSON API. The screenshot shows the JSON Sandbox app, which you can use to edit, execute and tune Lingo4G analysis requests.
The request shown in the screenshot finds documents that are similar to the user-provided _seed_ document. The panel on the right shows the data flow between the low-level text processing components defined by the request.

## Questions & Answers
### What are the applications of Lingo4G?[](#what-are-the-applications-of-lingo4g)
The natural use case is exploration of large volumes of human-readable text, such as scientific papers, business or legal documents.
You can combine Lingo4G basic text processing operations to build, for example, the following functionalities:
- Recommending tags for a new document based on the tags of the documents existing in the index.
- Example-based document search: finding documents similar to the example _seed_ document the user provides, based on keyword or semantic vector similarity.
- 2D map visualization of documents where semantically-similar documents occupy the same area of the map. Colors of the document marker on the map indicate the cluster to which the document belongs. Salient phrases extracted from documents describe the densely-populated areas of the map.
- Finding documents with highly overlapping content, which may suggest the documents are duplicates or plagiarised copies. Lingo4G can perform such a process efficiently for millions of documents at once.
### What is the largest collection Lingo4G can handle?[](#what-is-the-largest-collection-lingo4g-can-handle)
On modern hardware with a high-core-count CPU and fast SSD storage, Lingo4G can handle collections reaching hundreds of gigabytes or a terabyte of text.
If you'd like to test Lingo4G on such a large data set, Lingo4G comes with built-in support for indexing patent grant and application documents available from US Patent and Trademark Office. The collection is currently about 500 GB of text.
One important factor to consider is that currently Lingo4G does not offer distributed processing. This means that the maximum reasonable size of the project will be limited by the amount of RAM, disk space and processing power available on a single virtual or physical server.
### Which languages does Lingo4G support?[](#what-languages-does-lingo4g-support)
Currently, Lingo4G can only process English text. If you'd like to apply Lingo4G to content written in a different language, please contact us.
### What are the system requirements for Lingo4G?[](#what-are-the-requirements-for-lingo4g)
Lingo4G can run on any platform supporting Java 17 or later. While processing cannot currently be distributed to multiple machines, a high-end workstation with fast SSD storage should be capable of handling collections of several tens of gigabytes. For most data sets not exceeding gigabytes, any computer with 4GB of memory and some disk space will be sufficient. We very much recommend using SSD drives to store Lingo4G indices. Please see the [Requirements](https://get.carrotsearch.com/lingo4g/latest/doc/v2/requirements/) section of Lingo4G manual for more details.
### How is Lingo4G licensed?[](#how-is-lingo4g-licensed)
We require one Lingo4G license per one physical or virtual server that runs Lingo4G binaries, regardless of the number of cores on the server, the number of users and number of collections handled by the server.
For large-scale or non-typical deployment scenarios, such as OEM distribution, please get in touch.
### How many collections can I process on one server?[](#how-many-collections-can-i-process-on-one-server)
There are no restrictions on the number of Lingo4G instances running on one physical or virtual server. The only limit may be the capacity of the server, including RAM size, disk space and the number of CPUs.
### What is the cost of a Lingo4G license?[](#what-is-the-cost-of-a-lingo4g-license)
The cost of a license depends on the [edition](https://carrotsearch.com/lingo4g/editions/), please [contact us](mailto:info@carrotsearch.com) for a quote.
### Can I get a trial license?[](#can-i-get-a-trial-license)
Absolutely! Please get in touch for a [free evaluation package](https://carrotsearch.com/lingo4g/free-trial/).
### I have a Lingo3G license, will I receive Lingo4G as an upgrade?[](#is-lingo4g-an-upgrade-to-lingo3g)
No. Lingo3G and Lingo4G are two separate products we intend to offer and maintain independently. Lingo3G will remain an engine for real-time clustering of small and medium collections, while Lingo4G will address clustering of large data sets. Therefore, Lingo4G is not an upgrade to Lingo3G, but a complementary offering.
Having said that, if you would like to switch from Lingo3G to Lingo4G, we offer a license trade-in option and count the initial Lingo3G license purchase fee towards the Lingo4G license fee.
### Can I use the dotAtlas map visualization component in my application?[](#can-i-use-map-visualization-component-in-my-application)
The dotAtlas map visualization component shipping with Lingo4G Explorer is currently pre-release software. It's been battle-tested for months by early adopters, but lacks finalized API and documentation.
If you'd like to try integrating dotAtlas into your software, please let us know. We'll be happy to share the pre-release version along with code examples and initial guidance.
We will not charge any extra fees for the pre-release versions of dotAtlas. Once it enters the official product suite, the use of dotAtlas will require a license fee similar to the one that applies for Carrot Search FoamTree.

# Lingo4G or Lingo3G?
Use Lingo4G for collections of any size available in advance for indexing.
Lingo3G is for small and medium amounts of ad-hoc data.
Despite similar names, Lingo4G and Lingo3G are fundamentally different with respect to architecture, intended use cases and integration options. The following table summarizes the key differences.
| Lingo4G | Lingo3G |
|---|
| Primary use case | Analysis of small and large sets of documents where the collection a as a whole can be accessed for indexing. Good examples of such collections are the PubMed medical articles or Wikipedia data dumps, which can be downloaded for off-line processing. | Clustering of small and medium collections of ad-hoc, previously unseen textual content. Typical example of such content is search results from public search engines. While specific search results can be accessed on demand, complete contents of all documents in the collection is not available. |
| Architecture | Stateful. Lingo4G first needs to create a persistent index of all your documents. Once the index is created, you can request Lingo4G to analyze the whole indexed collection or different subsets of it. Including previously unseen documents in analyses requires re-indexing. The split into two phases allows Lingo4G to perform the expensive operations, such as tokenization of documents, only once during indexing. The index makes it then possible to analyze the whole collection or any subset of it in near-real-time. | Stateless. Lingo3G performs processing in one step, all documents provided on input will be immediately processed and disposed of. The stateless paradigm makes it possible to process arbitrary and previously unseen documents. The cost is that the time-consuming operations, such as tokenization, will be repeated for each set of documents being processed. |
| Maximum size of data analyzed at once | Millions of documents. The practical limit for the total size of the analyzed collection is about 1 TB of text. | Thousands of documents. The practical limit for Lingo3G's in-memory processing model is about 10 MB of text. |
| Memory requirements | Dependent on the specific analysis task. Lingo4G does not need to keep the text being analysed in-memory. For example, the memory requirements for label clustering depend on the number of selected labels, not the number of documents in scope. Therefore, label clustering can be applied to gigabytes of text and hundreds of thousands of documents while keeping memory requirements limited. | Increasing with the number and size of documents. Lingo3G keeps the input documents and their internal representation in-memory for the duration of processing. To ensure high-speed real-time processing, Lingo3G's internal representation of documents takes several times the size of the raw input text. Therefore, Lingo3G is not recommended for clustering more of about 10 MB of text at once. |
| Result facets | Lingo4G can perform a range of analysis tasks, including: - query-based document search,
- document text retrieval with query match highlighting,
- collecting labels from documents,
- finding semantically-similar labels,
- finding semantically-related documents,
- clustering labels or documents,
- 2d mapping of labels or documents,
- k-nearest-neighbors classification,
- duplicate content detection.
| Lingo3G results are conceptually similar to Lingo4G topic extraction. Conventional document clustering is not available in Lingo3G. |
| APIs and integration | Lingo4G comes with a standalone server application that exposes an HTTP/REST API. The server can run in any environment supporting Java 11 or later. | - Java API
- C# API
- HTTP/REST API
- Apache Solr plugin
- Elasticsearch plugin

## Questions and answers
### I have a **50 GB collection of patent applications**. I want to **extract topics for up to 1000-document subsets** of that collection. Which engine is better in this case?[](#topic-extraction-on-1000-doc-subsets-of-50gb-collection)
Both Lingo4G and Lingo3G are suitable in this case.
Lingo4G will create an index for your collection, which will give you the ability not only to extract topics, but also to search your collection, perform conventional document clustering, produce 2d document maps and complete more advanced text mining tasks, such as classification.
In case of Lingo3G, the easiest way to process your collection would be to index it in, for example, Apache Solr or Elasticsearch. Then, depending on the architecture of your software, you would either fetch documents from your search engine and feed them to Lingo3G Java/C# API for clustering, or have your search results clustered directly inside the search engine through Solr or Elasticsearch plugins.
### I have a **fast-growing collection** of social conversations and I'd like to detect emerging topics in that data. Is Lingo4G or Lingo3G suitable for the task?[](#emerging-topic-detection-in-fast-growing-collection)
While neither Lingo4G nor Lingo3G have a specific feature of emerging topic discovery, they will likely be useful components of such systems.
Currently, Lingo4G's fast incremental indexing option does not discover new phrases introduced by new documents. To allow Lingo4G to pick up new phrases from newly-added conversations, features would have to be periodically re-generated based on the whole collection. This may not be a problem if it is acceptable for the new phrases to enter analysis on, for example, daily basis.
If it is required for the new content to be considered immediately after it arrives, the only applicable engine is currently Lingo3G, possibly coupled with Apache Solr or Elasticsearch.
### I have a collection of 1 million research papers and I'd like to **extract topics for up to 200k-document subsets at once**. Which engine can handle that task?[](#topic-extraction-on-200k-docs-from-1m-collection)
Only Lingo4G can handle topic extraction for such large subsets of your collection. Its on-disk index makes it possible to analyze hundreds of thousands of documents within a limited memory footprint.
Lingo3G with its in-memory processing model is not suitable for inputs exceeding 10 MB of text.
### I'd like to cluster search results fetched from **public search engines**. Is Lingo4G suitable for this?[](#clustering-search-results-from-public-search-engine)
No, the only engine that fits here is Lingo3G.
Before clustering, Lingo4G needs to access the entire collection of documents in advance to create an index. In case of public search engines, the underlying collection is not usually available as a whole, which rules out Lingo4G[\*](#ad-hoc-processing-in-lingo4g).
Lingo3G, on the other hand, was designed to cluster data in one pass — you'd simply fetch the text of search results from the search engine, feed the text to Lingo3G and receive the search results clustered.
\*) One could imagine creating a temporary throwaway index just for the search results received from the search engine, which would make Lingo4G applicable as well. Currently, however, Lingo4G does not specifically support creating temporary indices, which makes the workaround cumbersome. Also, Lingo3G is optimized to perform real-time clustering of small data sets, so clustering of search results in Lingo3G will be much faster.

All licenses allow using Lingo4G internally for the evaluation, development, testing and tuning purposes.
### Pricing
Please [contact us](https://carrotsearch.com/contact/) for further licensing and pricing information.
### Licensing upgrades
Upgrades from one-year to perpetual and from a lower to a higher edition (e.g. from Medium to Large) are possible within the validity period of the original license.
### Volume and OEM licensing
For non-typical scenarios, such as large-scale server deployments or redistribution of Lingo4G as part of other software, licensing terms are negotiated separately to best match the customer's sales and distribution models. If you think you will need such a license, please get in touch to discuss the details.
### Lingo3G license trade-in
Holders of perpetual Lingo3G licenses can "trade in" their Lingo3G license to receive a Lingo4G license. We will count the initial purchase price (but not the maintenance extension fees) paid for Lingo3G towards the price of the Lingo4G license you wish to switch to. Once you trade-in your Lingo3G license, you will not be allowed to use Lingo3G with that license any more. To cover the Lingo3G to Lingo4G transition period, we'll issue long-term Lingo4G evaluation licenses.
## Questions & Answers
### Are there any subscription fees?[](#are-there-any-subscription-fees)
No. Both one-year and perpetual server licenses are available for a one-time licensing fee.
### How many collections can I process on one server?[](#how-many-collections-can-i-process-on-one-server)
There are no restrictions on the number of Lingo4G instances running on one physical or virtual server. The only limit may be the capacity of the server, including RAM size, disk space and the number of CPUs.
### What kind of limits can my Lingo4G license include?[](#what-limits-can-my-lingo4g-license-include)
Depending on your Lingo4G edition, your license file may include two limits:
- **Maximum total size of indexed documents,** defined by the `max-indexed-content-length` attribute of your license file. The limit restricts the maximum total size of the text indexed for the purposes of Lingo4G analysis. Text stored in the index only for literal retrieval is not counted towards the limit.
- **Maximum number of documents analyzed in one request,** defined by the `max-documents-in-scope` attribute of your license file. The limit defines the maximum size of the subset of your collection Lingo4G will analyze at a time. If the number of documents matching the subset definition query exceeds the limit, Lingo4G will ignore the lowest-scoring documents.
For example, the Medium Server edition will allow you to index all 240k (spanning about 3GB) questions from SuperUser.com and will cluster or extract topics for at most 50k questions at a time. If you request processing of a subset larger than 50k questions, Lingo4G will analyze the top 50k questions matching the subset definition query.
The above limits are enforced for each Lingo4G instance separately.
### Is the total number of documents in the index limited?[](#is-the-total-number-of-docs-in-the-index-limited)
No. Regardless of your Lingo4G edition, there will be no license-enforced limits on the total number of documents in Lingo4G index.

## Technical issues
### Can I add, update or remove documents from an existing Lingo4G index?[](#can-i-add-update-or-remove-documents)
Yes. With Lingo4G version 1.7.0 or later you can [add, update](https://get.carrotsearch.com/lingo4g/latest/doc/v2/incremental-indexing/) and [delete](https://get.carrotsearch.com/lingo4g/latest/doc/v2/commands/#l4g:delete) without re-indexing the whole collection.
### Does Lingo4G come as an Elasticsearch or Solr plugin?[](#does-lingo4g-come-as-es-or-solr-plugin)
No. Lingo4G is standalone software that manges its own index. The index contains Lingo4G-specific data that is not typically present in indices created by enterprise search engines. Therefore, Lingo4G will have to run in parallel to an Elasticsearch or Solr instance you might already have. As a result, the same will be stored separately in the two systems.
### Is Lingo4G an end-user product?[](#is-lingo4g-an-end-user-product)
No. Lingo4G was designed as a software component rather than a complete end-user application. The primary use case for Lingo4G is integration into larger software suites. Therefore, some programming experience will be required to get started and to use Lingo4G.
Having said that, Lingo4G comes with a GUI application, called Lingo4G Explorer, meant to allow rapid experiments and tuning of topic extraction and clustering. If Lingo4G Explorer meets the needs of your end users, feel free to use it. One thing to bear in mind is that our primary focus is on the underlying topic extraction and clustering algorithms, developing and extending Lingo4G Explorer is a lower priority.
### What does near real-time processing mean?[](#what-does-near-real-time-processing-mean)
Near real-time processing means that in most cases Lingo4G will be able to extract topics for a subset of documents in your index within seconds, regardless of the size of the subset. Clustering of tens or hundreds of thousands of documents may take several minutes.
To achieve near real-time performance during analysis, Lingo4G needs to index your collection first. Indexing is a one-time process where the initial text processing (tokenization, label extraction) is applied. On modern hardware, indexing speed is in the order of 200–500 MB per minute.
The performance of both indexing and analysis is crucially dependent on the technology used to store Lingo4G index. To maximize performance and CPU utilization, use fast SSD drives.
## Use cases

# How does it work?
First, let Lingo4G **index** all documents you'd like to process. Then, you can make requests to **analyze** subsets of the index to get topics and clusters.
(Which is much like an enterprise search engine needs to index documents before you can search them.)
You can get [started with Lingo4G](https://get.carrotsearch.com/lingo4g/latest/doc/v2/quick-start/) in four simple steps.
1. ## Prepare your data
Convert your documents to a key-value JSON format, [write a project descriptor JSON](https://get.carrotsearch.com/lingo4g/latest/doc/v2/creating-a-project/) file to define fields in your documents.
Lingo4G can also extract and [index contents of PDF, Word, HTML and plain text files](https://get.carrotsearch.com/lingo4g/latest/doc/v2/indexing-text-documents/).
Alternatively, start with some built-in data sets: [Stack Exchange Q&A](https://stackexchange.com/sites) data, [PubMed Open Access](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/tools/openftlist/) articles, [clinicaltrials.gov](https://clinicaltrials.gov) reports, [IMDb](https://imdb.com) movie descriptors, [research.gov](https://research.gov) grant descriptions, [Wikipedia](https://www.wikipedia.org/) or [US patents](https://bulkdata.uspto.gov).

2. ## Index the data
Let Lingo4G [preprocess](https://get.carrotsearch.com/lingo4g/latest/doc/v2/indexing/) the data first, much like a search engine needs to index documents before they are searchable:
`$ l4g index -p your-project.json`
On modern hardware indexing speed is in the order 200–2000 MB of text per minute.
This video shows the process of indexing SuperUser.com questions in Lingo4G large-scale text clustering engine.
3. ## Analyze
[Start the Lingo4G REST API server](https://get.carrotsearch.com/lingo4g/latest/doc/v2/quick-start/#starting-lingo4g-server) Lingo4G REST API server:
`$ l4g server -p your-project.json`
Use the Lingo4G Explorer app to [experiment](https://get.carrotsearch.com/lingo4g/latest/doc/v2/quick-start/#running-lingo4g-explorer) with topic extraction, clustering and 2D mapping.
This video shows Lingo4G topic extraction and document clustering applied to the SuperUser.com questions and answers database. The user interface featured in this video is Lingo4G Explorer, a browser-based application that ships with Lingo4G.
4. ## Use the API
Launch the [JSON Sandbox app](https://get.carrotsearch.com/lingo4g/latest/doc/v2/analysis-json-sandbox-app/) to try [Lingo4G Analysis API](https://get.carrotsearch.com/lingo4g/2.1.0.rc1/doc/v2/rest-api-v2-quick-start/). Try the basic text processing building blocks, such as:
- query-based document search,
- salient phrase extraction,
- clustering phrases into topics,
- clustering and 2D-mapping of documents,
- duplicate document detection.
Review examples of more complex requests, such as k-nearest-neighbors classification or example-based document search.

Unfortunately not. We only accept bank / wire transfers (SWIFT, SEPA). Most payments are processed within 1-2 business days.
To aid the transition, we can issue a temporary license to cover the payment processing period. Additionally, we can issue the final license based on a statement confirming that the wire has been initiated.
### Can I get a refund?[](#can-i-get-a-refund)

We offer a 50% discount when visualization licenses are purchased together with a Lingo3G or Lingo4G license. The discount also applies if you already hold a valid Lingo3G or Lingo4G license and would like to purchase a FoamTree or Circles license.
We also offer discounts when purchasing larger numbers of licenses, please get in touch for details.
